In the event a student will be absent from school, parents are to notify the Attendance Office at 201.896.2100/6.
Absences (Full Year):
In a full year course, such as English, Math, or Science, a student is allowed up to 12 absences before he or she is denied credit. All absences must be accompanied with a note, and if the absence is of 5 or more consecutive days, a doctor’s note is required.
Acceptable excuses for absences include:
- Physical or emotional illness
- Serious illness
- Death in the family
- Remedial health treatment
- Required attendance at court
- Any unusual circumstances, which requires absences for a long period of time, or circumstances which cause intermittent absences for chronic conditions may, with school administrative approval, allow for an extension or waiver of the absence rule.
Cuts (Full Year):
In a full year course, after 3 cuts, unexcused absences to class, the student will be denied credit in that course. A late of ten or more minutes to class is also considered a cut.
If a student has nine or more lates to any full year course, he or she will be denied credit of the class.
Three Marking Period Course:
A student is allowed up to 9 absences for a three marking period course, such as Physical Education, before he or she is denied credit. Acceptable excuses and reasons for absences apply, as stated above.
Two cuts or 6 lates will result in denied credit for a three marking period course.
Two Marking Period Course:
A student is allowed up to 6 absences in a half-year course, such as HSPA English or HSPA Math, before he or she is denied credit. Acceptable excuse and reasons for absences apply, as stated above.
Two cuts or 5 lates will result in denied credit for a half-year course.
One Marking Period Course:
A student is allowed up to 3 absences for a one marking period course, such as Health or Driver’s Education. Acceptable excuses and reasons for absences apply, as stated above.
A student will be denied credit with more than one cut, or 3 or more lates.
