Art I: (elective – Grade 9-12 – one-year course)
This course will cover the basics of design, color, drawing, painting and graphics. It is necessary to develop the skills that will be needed in more advanced art courses. Some Art History, presented in slide form, is also a part of this course. Career opportunities are explored.
Art II:
(elective – Grade 10, 11, 12 – one-year course)
This course will cover the basics of figure drawing, graphics, painting, crafts and three-dimensional design. Some Art History, presented in slide form, is also part of this course. Career opportunities are explored.
Art III:
(elective – Grade 11, 12 – one-year course)
This course will cover more advanced techniques in drawing and painting. Solving design problems will be a major part of this course as well as more advanced problems in three-dimensional design. Some Art History, presented in slide form, is also a part of this course. Career opportunities are explored.
Art IV:
(elective – Grade 12 – one-year course)
This course is designed for the student who wishes to strengthen art skills for a future vocation or avocation and is advanced in techniques of drawing and painting. Students will take part in collaboration projects, sites-specific art and artist proposal write-ups. Career opportunities are explored.
Art Appreciation:
(elective – Grade 9-12 – one-year course)
This course will give students an awareness of how cultures are reflected through the visual arts. It gives students the opportunity to explore the art of many countries, time periods and genres. Students will develop personal aesthetics through a program of visual selections in the form of slides, oral critiques, written reviews, videos, and literature.
Through the exploration of art through time and culture, students will be able to recognize and discuss artists’ styles, periods and techniques. They will develop an artistic vocabulary in order to verbalize during critique. This is a non-performance based course.
Portfolio Art – Honors:
(elective – Grade 11, 12 – one-year course)
This course is intended for the highly motivated student committed to serious study in Art III. This course will deal with building a portfolio, which will be evaluated by participating colleges for college entrance and/or college credit. Career opportunities are explored. Entrance to this course by teacher approval and interview only. Students must present 6-8 pieces of work for evaluation for entrance to course.
Men/Women’s Chorus I:

Choir I is a course in which the student develops the skills necessary for the performance of beginner’s choral music. Correct singing techniques and choral performance skills are studied and practiced. Music of various styles and periods is studied and performed. The student is expected to develop the necessary skills and implement them in two performances throughout the year. This course is designed to fulfill the Fine Arts requirement for graduation.

Choir II is a course in which the student develops the skills necessary for the performance of beginner’s choral music. Correct singing techniques and choral performance skills are studied and practiced. Music of various styles and periods is studied and performed. The student is expected to develop the necessary skills and implement them in two performances throughout the year. This course is designed to fulfill the Fine Arts requirement for graduation. Choir II has a prerequisite of Choir I.

Chorale:

This course is for the experienced choral student with a serious interest in singing and performing. Correct techniques and performance skills acquired in Choir will be further developed through the implementation of more complex music material. Teacher recommendation or an audition will be required.
Music Appreciation:
(elective – Grade 9-12 – one-year course)
This course will focus upon the field of music and the values that may be obtained from it. The students will develop good taste, imagination and a rich, cultural background through a well-organized program of listening to carefully selected recordings and worthwhile programs on television and radio, and exploring community resources.
Students will recognize common rhythmic patterns and will have musical experiences that give meaning to time values, intervals, musical vocabulary and other technical aspects of music. Upon this background should be built a useful knowledge of the theoretical basis of good music. This is a non-performance based course.

Band I:
(elective – Grade 8-12 – one-year course)
Band I is an experience that focuses on working together in a large group. Each small group within the Band is structured as a “mini-community,” all working through sectional and full rehearsals, as well as individual lessons to produce the fulfilling end product, the marching and/or concert performance. This course is open to 10 th, 11 th and 12 th grade students with approval of the instructor. The standards of performance are to increase in each year of participation. Students receive private instruction in addition to rehearsal and performance of band music of various styles and periods. Career opportunities are explored.

Band II:
(elective – Grade 10, 11, 12 – one-year course)
Band II is an experience that focuses on working together in a large group. Each small group within the Band is structured as a “mini-community,” all working through sectional and full rehearsals, as well as individual lessons to produce the fulfilling end product, the marching and/or concert performance. This course is open to all students who have completed Band I with the approval of the instructor. The standards of performance are to increase in each year of participation. Students receive private instruction in addition to rehearsal and performance of band music of various styles and periods. Career opportunities are explored.
Band III:

This course is open to all students who have completed Band III with the approval of the instructor. The standards of performance are to increase in each year of participation. Band I, II, III, IV – Honors:
(elective – Grade 9-12 – one year course)
Honors Band I, II, III, and IV is an experience that focuses on working together in a large group. Each small group within the Band is structured as a “mini-community,” all working through sectional and full rehearsals, as well as individual lessons to produce the fulfilling end product, the marching and/or concert performance. This course is open to all students who have achieved an advanced degree of proficiency on their instrument. Student must show evidence and be able to display a higher degree of musicality and technique. An audition is required. The standards of performance are to increase in each year of participation. Students receive private instruction in addition to rehearsal and performance of band music of various styles and periods. Career opportunities are explored.
Jazz Ensemble:
(elective – Grade 9-12 – one-year course)
Jazz Ensemble is an experience that focuses on working together in a small group. Each group within the band is structured as a “mini-community,” all working through sectional and full rehearsals, as well as individual lessons to produce the fulfilling end product, the Jazz Ensemble performance. This course is open to all students who have achieved a certain degree of proficiency on their instrument.
The standards of performance are to increase in each year of participation. Students receive private instruction in addition to rehearsal and performance of Jazz Ensemble music of various styles. Career opportunities are explored.
